Newman’s canonization by Pope Francis focuses attention on the extraordinary holiness and inner life of a man who spent most of his earthly years being misunderstood. He spent the remaining 45 years of his life in service to the church, and his impact on Catholic faith and doctrine has endured and increased in the 120 years since his death.
