Fr. Guinan’s award-winning Old Testament lectures are enjoyed by listeners in over 30 countries.

No other book of the Bible has captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of people through three millennia as vividly as Exodus. With stories of a prophet rescued from a basket on the river, the parting of a sea, and an entire nation wandering in the desert, this book seems made for the movies.

Appropriately, some theologians have called the book of Exodus “the most important book in the Bible.” It presents the foundation story of Israel as a people and provides the background for much of the New Testament presentation of Jesus. It is a story of liberation and victory over oppression.

In this series of 15 lectures, Fr. Guinan will address the oppression of Israelites in Egypt, their lament to God, and Moses’ role as hero. Next, Fr. Guinan will guide you through the years the Israelites spent in the desert, their covenant with God, and the Ten Commandments. Then you will examine the account of the building and furnishings of the tabern

Then you will examine the account of the building and furnishings of the tabernacle, to which a third of Exodus is dedicated.

After exploring the book, the course concludes with an examination of the historical nature of the text and how the foundational elements of Exodus reverberate throughout the rest of the Bible.

Praise for Michael Guinan
“I first attended a lecture by Father Guinan about 20 years ago and immediately recognized him as a great teacher. He brings top-notch scholarship, excellent delivery, and a strong pastoral sense to every project. Teaching in the Philippines has given him a very broad vision.”– Father Pat McCloskey, O.F.M.,  “Ask a Franciscan” columnist for St. Anthony Messenger
“Fr. Michael Guinan is a great communicator and one of those teachers who is able to assimilate a lot of material… and communicate it all in a concise, clear, and often humorous way. It is no wonder that he is a very popular teacher in the NYKM series.” – Fr. Robert J. Karris, O.F.M., Research Professor, Franciscan Institute, St. Bonaventure University

    Excellent with caveats

Michael D. Guinan does an excellent job walking through the Book of Exodus and reviewing the text. He also points our structural dependencies and reviews many theories.

He correlates the exodus story with myths from other cultures pointing out how the exodus story has had both a positive and negative effect on many ethnicities throughout history in a manner that classical myths have not.

Strangely, he references homosexuality twice in his presentation as an advocate, which remains a mystery to me.

All in all an excellent review of the Exodus story with the caveat of the inclusion of homosexuality.

    Winter Survey: January 2017

The symbols of the Old Testament, with the Laws and the Rituals, which challenged my attention span, were important because they pointed to Christ. Fr. Michael D. Guinan is very knowledgable.
